Program Description:
The program is designed to generate multi-skilled medical laboratory technicians whose primary function is the collection of blood specimens for testing and other non-blood specimen such as urine, throat culture and stool and take routine EKG as well as analyzing basic EKG. At ITF the objective of this program prepares the graduate to apply for entry-level EKG Technician and Phlebotomist positions. This program’s emphasis on providing the student with comprehensive basic knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology of Heart, Infection Control, Phlebotomy Procedures, Special collection procedure for Blood and Non-Blood Specimens, operating the EKG machine, analyzing the EKG Strips, understanding and distinguishing different types of Arrhythmias, recognizing Myocardial Infarction changes. The EKG/Phlebotomy graduate is expected to effectively handle phlebotomy procedures, related lab paperwork properly, non-blood specimen collection such as routine urine collection, urine drug tests, and throat culture procedures, and common complications.

EP 110 – Medical Terminology
The students will learn medical terms, spelling, meaning and pronunciations in this course. Common medical abbreviations, singular and plural endings are emphasized. Students will be familiar with terminology commonly used in the clinical and hospital settings.
EP 111 – Anatomy & Physiology
This course will introduce students through lecture and laboratory exercises to the introductory information about the human body. Students will learn cell structure and function, skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, blood vessels and body organs.
EP 112 – Phlebotomy
This course is providing the student with basic knowledge of medical terminology, of the phlebotomist’s role in the healthcare setting, history of phlebotomy, professionalism, comprehensive theory of the cardiovascular system, basic infection control techniques, phlebotomy procedures, special collection procedures and hands-on dummy arms.
EP 113 – EKG
Basic knowledge of medical terminology students are introduced to related to EKG, cardiovascular system, infection control, operation of the EKG machine, interpret and analyze EKG strips, and theory and EKG applications of dysarrhythmia and myocardial infraction.
